A Public Adjuster is licensed by the state which requires successful
completion of a rigorous state authorized course followed by a
written State Exam in most States. Licensing by the State also
requires the PA to be bonded. They are also required to take
ongoing continuous education courses to maintain their license.
The title typically used for this adjuster is known as a “PA” for Public
Adjuster in the insurance industry. They are typically self employed
and contract their services directly with the policy holder (insured)
to handle and often file the claims on behalf of a policy holder to
the Insurance Companies. The PA is paid a percentage of the
proceeds from the Insurance claim for compensated damage from
the covered loss directly from the insured. Typically there is no
compensation if the claim was denied by the carrier.
The PA is the legal contact with the insurance company and any of
their representatives. A PA typically require a limited power of
attorney from the policy holder to facilitate negotiations with the
carriers and contractors involved.
The duties of the PA include:
•
Contracting with the insured and setting an appointment
for an inspection to determine if there is a covered loss
•
Inspecting the property for the claimed damage
•
Preparing a detailed estimate of damage which includes
photo documentation of the claimed damage
•
Typically contacting and filing all required documentation
to the Insurance Carrier for the claimed damage on behalf
of the insured
•
Managing all phases of the claims and recovery process on
behalf of the insured
